Charcoal Grilling Tips

To get that charcoal flavor requires a bit of patience. So when grilling with charcoal would it kill you to give the briquettes time to get up to heat?


Ideally you want the briquetes all to have a light covering of gray ash. That's THE sign they've heated up nicely and ready to start cooking.

It takes 20-25 minutes for this to happen. But most don't wait that long. What's worse some don't wait at all. You aren't really speeding things up by doing this.

Another tip? Those vents found on your charcoal barbecue grills are there for a reason. They help maintain air flow which helps you keep a constant even cooking temperature.
So don't try to cook with the vents closed.

Oh and don't open and close them as you're cooking. Open them and leave them open for best results.

Finally whether you're using gas or charcoal don't be a member of the "constant flipper" club.

Yeah, too many backyard barbecuers turn the meat too quickly and too often. Keeping it from searing and cooking properly.

Rule of thumb? Turn food once. If you have to do it more often you're not waiting long enough before turning it. It's a common rookie mistake. Now don't you be guilty of making it.
