More About Deep Fried Turkey Cookers

We're in the middle of exploring deep fried turkey cookers tips. Getting into the home made variety.

Basically what you need is a 40 to 60 quart pot, a burner and a propane gas tank.

Always always always make sure you do your turkey frying out side. (And the garage is NOT "outside" enough.) But that's because technically deep frying a turkey is a fire hazard.

Ideally, you want to place your home made deep fried turkey cooker in an open dirt area, free of any dry foliage that could easily catch fire.

And in case you're wondering frying on wood decks is also a no-no. So avoid those as well.

Now you'll need about five gallons of high smoke point oil. More if your turkey is over 15 pounds.

Turkey Deep Frying Tips: To know how much oil you need, place the turkey in the pot. Add water until it is about an inch or two over the top of the bird. Measure how much water you added and you'll know exactly how much oil to put into your home-made deep fried turkey cooker.

By the way high smoke point oils include peanut, corn, safflower , or even canola oil. While it's traditional to use peanut oil, it's not a requirement to fry the turkey. Peanut oil is just what's commonly used in Louisiana because of its abundant flavor as well as its very high smoking point. Since you really don't want your oil catching fire.

Finally this can be messy. Rather than staining your driveway or patio, head to your neighborhood auto parts store and get a drip tray. Weighing in at about about 24inches by 36 inches they look like a huge cookie sheet. Cover it with kitty litter and stick it under your turkey fryer set up.

For best results keep the turkey between eight and fourteen pounds. Do so and I bet that once you've tried it fried; you'll never go back to roast turkey.
