9 Turkey Deep Fryer Safety TipsTurkey deep fryer safety is not something to take lightly.Just ask Jeff Harris an Illinois firefighter. It only takes a minute of inattention and you can suddenly have this huge turkey deep fryer fire on your hands. The one that broke out on Jeff did $25,000 in damage.
3) ALWAYS wear well-insulated protective gloves or oven mitts that cover your hands and arms when adding the turkey. It's not a bad idea to wear safety goggles to shield your eyes from oil splatter too. 4) NEVER use a low smoke point oil like olive oil. Stick with high smoke point oils like peanut or corn or canola instead. And be careful not to overfill your fryer. 5) ALWAYS try to use deep turkey fryers with four or more legs for added stability. Use it on a level surface and don't move it once it's fired up. 5) NEVER leave the fryer unattended - even for a moment. 6) ALWAYS keep an eye on fryer oil temperature when frying. Do not let it exceed your fryers recommended temperature. And if the oil begins to smoke the oil is probably too hot. 7) NEVER cheerfully ignore any of your turkey fryer's safety warning or guidelines that come with the manual. To be safe follow them word for word. 9) ALWAYS keep children and pets a safe distance away from the fryer. Even during the cool down period after you've fried your turkey the oil is still dangerously hot. Now if despite your extra care a fire should happen, call 911 and get professional firefighters on the scene immediately. You should NEVER attempt to put out a huge oil fire by yourself. The house you save may be your own.
